Darran’s marathon effort pays dividends

One of our supporters, Darran Loader, pulled out all the stops to help us raise funds in 2013.  As he explained, “I decided to run four marathons, do a parachute jump and finish off with a desert trek to raise money for Bowel Cancer IOM because it is a charity close to my heart. My father Shaun passed away from bowel cancer in 2009 and my father in law Clive passed away from the same in 2001. I have met other people who have been effected by bowel cancer in some way or another and really want to make people aware of bowel cancer, its effects and what they can do to maybe prevent it.”  Darran’s aim was to raise £2,000 but he has far exceeded his target with £3,000 received to date.

The four marathons he entered were in Blackpool, Belfast (where he took part in a parachute jump the same weekend as the marathon), Chester and here in the IOM.

The finale was the Jordan Desert Trek which took place in November 2013 – a 5 day trek starting at the Dead Sea and finishing in the red rock city of Petra.

Darran went through some tough times, especially during his desert trek challenge in Jordan when he suffered from illness and blisters, but at those times he reminded himself why he was doing the challenges.  He said, “It was an amazing, challenging and emotional year for me completing all the challenges.  The marathons were exhausting and stressful on my body, yet the feeling when I crossed the finish lines at each event was fantastic, especially holding hands with my 4 year old daughter at the finish of the Blackpool and IOM marathons.  I made some wonderful friends and met amazing local Bedouin people who live in the desert and came away from there feeling very humbled and appreciative of what I have in my life.  I would like to do something similar again, but maybe in a few years’ time!  In the meantime I plan to continue helping promote awareness of the charity and also of bowel cancer itself.”

Darran is very grateful to his sponsors, in particular Capital International who have given him fantastic encouragement and support throughout 2013.
