Each year Cronk y Voddy Ploughing Society donate a sum of money to a chosen charity. Their charity for 2016 was Bowel Cancer IOM.
The first event in the Society’s calendar was on Tynwald Day with their annual sports event. Their second event was at the Starvey farm on 28 August. These bygone days, to some, are best forgotten or just preserved as memories. In present day, combines of various sizes move in to cut the corn but in days past, it was a far bigger job. Men and women moved in with scythes, firstly to open roads round the fields making sheaves by hand, and then making bands out of corn to tie around the sheaves. Once the roads were open, in would come the binder as seen in the picture.
The final event in their fundraising calendar was a ploughing match on Saturday, 21 January 2017, followed by a concert and supper when they presented a whopping £4,000 cheque to Bowel Cancer IOM.

Bowel Cancer IOM is very grateful to have been chosen to benefit from the Society’s fundraising. Thank you!
